Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best than her stage name Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah's work in the fields of music, film and television has resulted in her receiving an Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. an officer in the police force. Their divorce occurred at the age of Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was a student at the Catholic school in Newark NJ and was educated in the Baptist Church. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and gentle in Arabic was given to her by her aunt when she was only eight. Latifah was always tall, standing 5'10", she was the strong forward for her high school basketball team. The number she sang was Home from The musical The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah started beatboxing for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah was among those who were part of the first form of Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps is Freddy. The song got the attention from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and, in 1988, released her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
